During skateboarding sessions, comments on social networks or when we are chatting with our teams in stores, there are some questions that are coming back really often. JP (skateboard product manager) and Eric (Decathlon Skateboarding brand leader and longboard product manager) are answering them in full transparency.
Our team works daily to develop products and find solutions to reduce their environmental impact. We have several concrete actions underway.
Firstly, all our plastic products are being modified to use as much recycled plastic as possible. The Big Yamba Cruiser (83% recycled plastic deck) is already available, next year it will be the turn of the Yamba 100 and then the Play 100 and Play 500 kids skateboards. This takes time as we have to find the right formulation so that this change does not alter the mechanical properties of the products.
Secondly, on our wooden skateboards and longboards, we now use almost exclusively FSC certified wood from ecologically managed forests. In addition, we have adapted our junior skates specifically to the size of children, which has allowed us to reduce the amount of wood used and thus reduce the environmental impact of the product.
In parallel, we are also working on the formulation of our wheels, in order to offer components that are bio-sourced, but also on the glue and varnish, where we aim for 100% biodegradable components.
We build an offer that we make available for all the countries where Decathlon is present. Then, on this basis, each customs zone (Europe, China, Africa, Brazil...) determines its own local offer and it can happen that some products of our catalogues are not selected: do not hesitate to report the lacks that you can notice in your customs zone to the people in charge of the local offer.
Finally, not all products are available in shops (because not all shops have the same size or the same potential). In any case, the entire selected offer is available on the Internet.
Additional sizes/colours mean additional stock in the shop. This has a significant cost. So yes, we plan to expand our offer but little by little, as our sales grow.
Yes, this is definitely the area where we have the most work to do. The new Vulca 500 is the best skate shoe we've offered so far, but that's not enough. There are even half sizes available on the internet so that everyone can find the right shoe. For 2023, we are working on the new cupsole Crush 500 for adults and children. In 2024, we want to offer a top-of-the-range model that should make people talk... To be continued
Yes, it's clear that skateboarding is becoming more and more feminine and that's great news! However, the female skaters we interviewed are not particularly looking for a dedicated range. We are trying to offer unisex ranges for the moment. For example, we've just expanded our shoe size range to start in size 36 to meet the needs of more women. In addition, our next products are being developed in partnership with skateboarders, notably Roos Zwetsloot with whom we are working on textiles which should be available in 2024.
It's clear that despite the progress we've made in the last 3 years, there's still work to be done to make it known. Too many skaters don't know that our boards and wheels are as technical as the best brands for a much more accessible price. Sponsoring is therefore a must in order to show what our products are capable of.
We have signed with Edouard Damestoy on the boards. Originally from Bordeaux, Edouard is one of the best ramprider / bowl rider in the world. Winner of the Vert attack in Malmo (Sweden) in 2019, Tony Hawk Vert alert in 2021, 1st French rider to win a gold medal at the X Games in 2022 and winner of the best trick at the Tony Hawk Vert Alert last August.
We also signed with Roos Zwetsloot, a rider from the Netherlands who rides our wheels. She finished 5th in the Tokyo Olympics in street and is a regular participant in the Street League. Don't hesitate to follow her on Instagram.
More names should follow....
To build a good brand image, we first work on the quality of our product range. Then we have to make it known with a team of riders who demonstrate what our products are capable of, and finally we put a lot of energy into making our meaning real: being useful to the development of skateboarding through our passion. This is why we support many skate clubs, skatepark projects etc...
How could Decathlon harm the skateboarding world when we are the brand that most skaters start with? Our first responsibility is to offer beginners and those who can't afford to spend 80€ every month on a board technical products that are affordable. We also support many events such as the French Bowl and Street championships. This contributes to the development of our sport.
The real competition for the shops are the brands they distribute, which are selling more and more directly via their own websites or specialised sites that offer a wide range of products at a lower price. Nowadays, you don't have to go to a skateshop to buy skate shoes...
Our new range of spare parts with the DK120 / 500 as well as our wheels are quite at the expert level. Our wheels are running in the Street League and our boards are winning the X games. I can't think of a better example. In 2023, we will release a new board construction that is stronger, lighter and has a more durable pop: the DK900. A must try!
Our current surfskate is dedicated to riding and pumptrack. We made some modifications on the front truck to limit the squeaking that could be noticed in the first version. Next year, there will be an additional size available (30", shorter, more dedicated to small sizes). In parallel to these models, we are working on a spring-loaded articulated truck with a surf training programme.
In conclusion, we hope that we have answered your justified questions. There are of course many other subjects that have been worked on lately, I invite you to read or re-read our design stories: www.decathlonskateboarding.com
