Discover the story behind the development of the new version of our VULCA 500, a vulcanized shoe made for skateboarding

An upgraded version of the VULCA 500

We launched the VULCA 500 in spring 2018. This model is a suede vulcanized skate shoe with reinforced rubber toe and heel cap. The vulcanised construction offers very good flexibility and boardfeel.

After skating these shoes for 2 years and listening to the feedbacks of several skaters we started to have a pretty good idea about what makes this shoe great and what could be done to make it even better. Therefore, we took upon the mission to develop a new version even more suited for the demanding needs of skateboarding.

What makes a great skate shoe?

Expectations of skate shoe vary according to the type of skate you are doing. Someone who is into big set of stairs will definitely look more for cushioning will for some other it will all be about the boardfeeel. However, there are some universal attributes you want to have. On this second version we focused on three mains points: fitting, cushioning and durability.

Cast polyurethane insole: more comfort and protection during receptions.

We received several feedbacks on the previous version of our shoe regarding the lack of cushioning. On this new version we changed the EVA insole for a cast polyurethane insole that allows to absorb the shocks durably while preserving the boardfeel. With a thickness of 9mm in the heel and 5mm in the forefoot, this insole is not afraid of big impacts. The compression set of the polyurethane is very low, so this insole will keep its initial shape and technical characteristics for a long time.

A fitting specially designed for skateboarding

The skate shoe is the interface between the skater's body and his board. That's why it's important that the shoe is relatively close to the foot in order to have maximum precision and control of the board.

We have taken into account customer feedback and decided to redesign a new shape, thinner and narrower. This shape, closer to the foot, allows you to feel the board better during tricks, to be more precise, more in control in all situations.

Hidden Rubber Toecap for extra durability

We added a hidden laminated rubber reinforcement under the leather on the toecap. This additional reinforcement, strong and discreet, helps delay the appearance of holes on the side of your shoes due to the repeated aggression of the board's grip. Once the leather layer is worn out you still have the hidden laminated rubber reinforcement to protect your toes. In addition, the outsole of the shoe is 11% thicker to resist even more wear and tear, without compromising boardfeel and grip.

Slip-on version

Reducing our environmental footprint

We continue our efforts to reduce our environmental footprint. This is reflected in the careful selection of our components. The inner lining of the VULCA 500 II is dyed using the "dopedyed" process which saves 30% of CO2. The color of the yarn is directly integrated into the yarn material. The first assembly is now made of a 100% recycled polyester material, 56% less impacting than the material used on the previous version.
